How Far Do You Agree with the View That the Limited Appeal?

Mazzini was a significant nonentity for the unification of Italy, students of history, for example, Pearce and Stiles express that that ‘no one else crusaded for such a long time or so vigorously in the reason for an assembled Italy'. He had amazingly radical and liberal thoughts regarding how Italy ought to be brought together, and a few antiquarians Mazzini’s perfect was that Italy ought to be bound together ‘from below’.He needed the individuals of Italy to ascend from their powerful oppressors, while as yet keeping up the feeling that on the off chance that rulers were arranged and needed to battle against the Austrian control, at that point they ought to be bolstered and not impeded. He needed a ‘brotherhood of the people’ to all advance toward more prominent social equity (Denis Mack Smith depicted him as having ‘contempt for xenophobia and government) with the goal that the entirety of the individuals of Italy would join so as to br ing together their country.Mazzini additionally focused on that Italy ought to be brought together ‘by its own efforts’, needing to stay away from any outside assistance particularly from France-in dread that they may simply supplant one outside mastery by another. In any case, the constrained intrigue of his thoughts were indicated when Italy was in the long run joined together and accomplished more-so from above than it was beneath he was portrayed as being ‘disgusted’ by this and reprimanded the new Italian brought together state, depicting it as a ‘dead corpse’.It could be contended that Italy could have been bound together before under Mazzini’s watch on the off chance that it had not been for how his ‘one superseding aim’ diverted from the primary objective of an assembled Italy. It could likewise be contended, as Robert Pearce subtleties, that Mazzini was ‘absent from Italy’ for such a long and expanded t ime of him (totalling in ‘all more than 40 years’) that he became ‘out of touch’ with this circumstance. This at that point made him over-overstate the ‘national identity’ of Italians. This implied that he dis-valued the progressive capability of the workers/the everyday citizens, as he had little to none contact with them and thought minimal about them. Because of this visual impairment, his further endeavors to cause unification fizzled, a case of this is a sorted out insurrection inside the Piedmont that at that point fizzled however the most clear was the disappointment of the arranged uprising in Naples, wherein Mazzini went on the suspicion that the laborers were ‘a spring of gushing lava going to erupt’-while this was not the truth of the situation. We can likewise observe instances of his disassociation to the ‘real’ individuals of Italy in his political society ‘Young Italy’; in spite of being haile d as ‘Italy’s first genuine political party’, their participation was very constrained to knowledgeable, youthful, working class men. It was here that one of Mazzini’s significant shortcomings became evident that because of his ‘complex thinking’ just as his investigations of law and medication, his thoughts turned out to be excessively mentally progressed for a great many people to get a handle on and unquestionably unreasonably radical for the ‘cautious, white collar class reformers’.This kept numerous from joining the reason prompting bombed overthrows in Piedmont just as uprisings in Naples and Savoy. His supporters depicted him as the ‘greatest, boldest, generally brave of Italians'. His profoundly extreme methodology drove his political foes to blame him for being a ‘enemy of Italy' and a ‘terrorist'. His thoughts were of majority rule government, rights, and correspondence for all (he even campained for th e privileges of ladies, needing to give them the vote). These thoughts were exteremely liberal and were a long way from constrained as in they were not blue-penciled or conservative and they propelled numerous to the reason. Notwithstanding, his thoughts were ridiculous for the occasions (ladies would not get the full vote until after World War II), yet it was the way that his thoughts were very current and strikingly extreme that changed over individuals to Mazzini's concept of a ‘democratic, self-overseeing state'. This would propose that his thoughts were not constrained, however speaking to the individuals of Italy.

Favorite Places around Morningside Heights COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Favorite Places around Morningside Heights COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog If you have not already checked out the SIPA Survival Guide, I highly recommend you do so (http://www.sipa.columbia.edu/students/sipasa/documents/SIPASurvivalGuide2012.pdf). It is a veritable treasure trove of information on places to eat, play and study.   In that spirit, I wanted to share some of my favorite places around Morningside Heights, some of which are in there, and some of which are not. Favorite place to study: Teacher’s College.  Teacher’s college is right near the SIPA building on 120th Street.   Unlike the concrete jungle that is SIPA, TC’s library and dining hall have that classic old university feeling without being overrun by undergrads like the main campus. Unlike the Law School, Teacher’s College has an open WiFi network and its library is open to anybody with a Columbia ID. The library features private group study rooms, an open plan talking area and quiet study area with big tables and smaller study carrels. There is a café on the first floor that serves (hello!) Starbucks coffee as well as other small items and people are pretty open about bringing drinks/small snacks into the library. I am also a fan of TC’s Grace Dodge Dining Hall. It is usually pretty quiet in there but the food is the best quality I have had anywhere in campus including a pick your own salad, pizza and sandwich bar. Favorite place to blog/apply to jobs from: Brad’s Café at the Journalism School.   When I’m feeling less academic and more professional, my favorite place to work is Brad’s Café, located at the Journalism School right inside in the Broadway 116th Street entrance. Brad’s has outdoor seating which is partially enclosed during the cooler months and features a scrawling news feed and all day TV news coverage. Note, seating is for patrons only so be prepared to buy something.  Every time I’m in there I feel like I’m about to file a story with my bureau chief. Favorite place to bring tourists:   Grant’s Tomb. Devotees with not be surprised to learn that I’m a big American history nerd and there is a real treasure, the General Grant National Memorial, right in our own backyard. (http://www.nps.gov/gegr/index.htm) Most times it’s pretty quiet so you will be able to impress your guests by arranging a private tour. Favorite place for a treat: Crumbs Cupcakes (Broadway and 109th).  New Yorkers love cupcakes and Crumbs is the crème de la crème, literally. Giant crème filled cupcakes in every flavor imaginable. They do sell mini cupcakes, but the smallest they come in is a pack of six. For this reason, when I’m feeling the cupcake craving I usually plan a trip right before a group meeting. That way I can buy a six pack, snag the best one (or two!) for myself and be a group project hero! Crumbs also sell Starbucks coffee and the line is usually much shorter than at Starbucks.   Ten coffees here earns you a free drink PLUS a free cupcake. Favorite quick bite to eat: Cascabel Taqueria (Broadway and 108th).  Casual, friendly, the best tacos I have ever had. My favorite is the Carne Asada, but if you’re in the mood for something lighter the pummel (which is actually just grapefruit) and avocado salad is very refreshing.   They have fairly decent margaritas as well.

6 Ways to Help Your Clients Maximize Financial Aid

Financial Professional Content When a client has a child attending college shortly, you can almost guarantee that you'll be getting a barrage of questions about financial aid. "Am I eligible?" "What forms do I fill out?" "How can I make sure that I get the most financial aid possible?" The first two questions are pretty straight forward, but the latter can be an opportunity for you to add value to your client. You can achieve this buy having a handful of tactics up your sleeve to lower their expected family contribution (EFC). Colleges look to see how much a family can spend on education, the EFC, before they award an aid package. The lower you can keep it, the higher their chance of receiving a larger aid package. Below are a few tactics you can use. It should be noted that these tactics are completely legal and simply take advantage of the federal methodology's treatment of family assets and income. Estimate your financial aid eligibility here 1. Real estate. This can be a great way to bring in monthly income, while potentially adding $0 to your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). It can also serve as lodging for your client's college-bound student. This is because real estate, in most cases, allows for a depreciation deduction. You could suggest that your client buy a 3-bedroom condo near campus and rent out 2 of the 3 bedrooms to their child's friends. If this rent were to bring in, after expenses, an amount equal to the depreciation deduction (e.g., $8,000 in income after expenses and a $8,000 deduction), the property adds $0 to their AGI. Note: You will still need to include the fair market value of the house on your list of assets. RELATED: How 7 different assets affect financial aid eligibility 2. Capital gains and losses. This applies if your client has stocks, bonds or other investments that would trigger a capital gain or loss. Be sure to explain to your client that they need to be careful about what they sell beginning the January of their child's junior year of high school up until the January of when they are a junior in college. During these years they will more than likely fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and their assets will affect their aid package. If your clients sell anything at a gain, the package will be reduced. However, some strategically timed losses can be of use. Example. Bob, your client, has money invested in the stock market. Some of his positions are up, and some are down. With his child attending college soon, you advise him to just sell off the down positions of stocks you don't believe will recover, triggering a $10,000 capital loss. Not only will your client pay less in taxes, you reduce his AGI on the FAFSA form $3,000 every year over the next 3 years and $1,000 in his child's senior year (capital losses can be carried forward). This could lead to thousands of dollars more in federal aid for his child, taking some of the pain away from that $10,000 loss. 3. Social Security. This affects clients who are 62 or older and have a child applying for financial aid. Encourage them, if they can, to delay taking social security. Although they will currently forego monthly income, it will lower their AGI and increase the aid package their child receives. 4. IRAs. There are times when converting a pretax IRA to a Roth makes sense for your client, but if they have a child applying for need-based aid you might encourage them to wait. If your clients are fortunate enough not to have to fill out a FAFSA form, proceed with a conversion. But if they are going to submit a FAFSA, converting will trigger income that needs to be reported and lower the potential aid package. 5. Defer income. If your client's employer allows them any type of deferred compensation, bonuses for example, it merits a discussion. Delaying the payment of these funds until after your client's child finishes college would lower his or her AGI and thus increase the aid package, at least if the institution is using the FAFSA method. 6. Pay down debt. The FAFSA methodology does not take into account your consumer debt. $5,000 in assets and $5,000 in consumer debt means you have $5,000 worth of assets on hand. By paying off a portion or all of your debt, you can reduce your amount of assets and thus increase the amount of aid your child is eligible for. But remember, it is always wise to have a three to six month emergency fund, so only pursue this tactic if that fund stays intact. While these tactics can potentially increase your client's financial aid package, be sure to remind them that what they receive might not be what they were hoping for. There is no guarantee that the increased aid will be in the form of scholarships or grants. It could be made up entirely of loans, which will have to be repaid by either your client or their child. Note: Colleges using the Profile methodology for financial aid might reduce the effectiveness of these tactics Financial Professional Content When a client has a child attending college shortly, you can almost guarantee that you'll be getting a barrage of questions about financial aid. It is a choice because one requires the mind to decide, while it is a disease because one needs medication to heal. This paper is therefore focused on discussing whether addiction is a choice or a disease depending on how one gets addicted and how they get out of addiction. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Interviewing Assignment" essay for you Create order Background People get addicted to drugs for different reasons. When one is born, they are born with a free will and are also free from any preference. A child does not know what is bad or good, but they learn as they grow up. Consequently, a child or an adult is exposed to drugs as they grow up. For instance, a child can know about drugs through parents who use them. A child can also learn about drugs on the television or through friends. As the child learns about drugs, they either get attracted or repel the drugs. Those who become drug addicts choose to drink or take hard drugs. Further, if ones parents are addicts, they are also likely to become addicts themselves. Therefore, addiction can be termed as either a choice that a person makes or a disease that is awakened by a slight use of drugs. Addiction settles in when one takes drugs and is unable to control how they use them (Schaler, 2011). Further, the drugs become their priority and everything else including studies and family are dictated by drug usage. Drug usage starts as a normal routine where in most instance one uses alcohol or cigarettes to relax with friends. As the habit continues, one becomes a regular at a bar and they take more than what they used to take before the addiction took over. Addiction becomes full blown when one is unable to live without the usage of drugs and they make the drugs a priority. The drug addict should go for rehabilitation or therapy to help them stop the habit. Further, one should make up their mind that they will not use drugs anymore for the treatment to work. Unborn children can become exposed to drugs if their parents, especially the mother, takes drugs while pregnant or while breast feeding. The unborn baby can take drugs through the placenta as it is transferred from the mother to them. Similarly, a breastfeeding mother can pass drugs to the child through the breast milk. As the child grows up they can easily become addicts of they involve themselves with drugs because the drugs are already in their systems. However, it is not a guarantee that the child must be an addict because it depends on whether they will start taking the drugs or not. Addiction can therefore be far fetched from the time the child is unborn to when they are toddlers. A mother preparing to get pregnant is also advised against using any drugs so that her system can be free of any drugs when they get the baby. If there are strong drugs in the system, they might affect the unborn baby and if the baby grows up and uses drugs, they can easily become addicts. Choice A choice is a conscious decision that one makes, as they have to select between two or more options (Gruenert, 2010). One makes a choice depending on their preference and goals in life. One might have a preference of going to the bar or choosing friends who use drugs. As a result, they end up becoming addicts as they choose to have addicted friends. Moreover, drug addiction can be termed as a choice because a drug user decides whether to take a drug or not. For instance, if a boy goes to a friend’s party and get free alcohol and heroine being used, he can decide whether to take the alcohol and use the heroine. The decision to take Alcohol or heroine is however dictated by their personal preference, their principles, background, and what they want in life.one might chose to use the drugs because everyone else is doing so, therefore, showing that they are easily influenced by the latest trends. If one choses to abstain from the drugs, it shows that they have strong principles. A ddiction can therefore be termed as a choice as one has the free will to decide whether they want to take a drug or not. While undergoing treatment, drug addiction is termed as a choice. One should decide to stop taking drugs for him or her to stop being addicts (Gruenert, 2010). Over a half of addicts who check in rehabilitation centers relapse. On the contrary, over 10% of or drug addicts who decide to do away with the addiction and do not go for any treatment but are able to stop the addiction successfully. This is a clear indication that drug addiction is a choice that one makes in their mind. One can choose to stop the addiction or to refrain from becoming an addict altogether. Decisions that one makes concerning drugs should be made wisely because addiction is expensive to maintain. If one comes from a family of drug addicts, they are in many cases likely to become addicts. However, this depends on their choice to start drugs or to refrain from them. If one does not use drugs then they will not awaken the addiction. However, if one takes the drugs they are most likely to become addicts because they already have the drugs in their system through their bloodline. Similarly, people who were addicts before can easily relapse if they choose to take drugs again. The choice to take drugs depends on one’s will power to say no to drugs. One can choose to stay away from situations and people who make them use drugs. Further, they can choose to stay clean for the sake of their own dignity and to be able to achieve their goals. Addiction therefore depends on ones ability to choose between refraining from drugs or taking them. Disease A disease is commonly expounded as the malfunction of a specific body part, has signs and symptoms, and does not necessarily emerge from physical injury (Hensher, Rose Greene, 2015). If an arm is aching, it means that the arm could be infected. Addiction fits the definition of a disease because it affects the mind fist. The mind becomes sick not because of any physical injury but because of the thinking that an addict does. Drugs stimulate the brain first and excite the user. As a result, the user takes more drugs to continue exciting their minds. The more drugs one takes, the more they become dependent on drugs. Addiction therefore settles in because of the mind malfunctioning. Drugs change the normal functioning of the brain and as a result, a drug addict is sick in the brain. The condition affects the way one thinks as they only choose to take drugs in a bid to excite their brains. Addiction can be termed as a disease because it can be inherited(Drug Addiction and Families, 2007). For instance, if a father is an addict, a child can easily become an addict if he or she uses drugs at one point in their lives. Addiction is therefore in an addict’s blood and only waits to be awakened by the use of drugs. Thus, addiction can be classified together with other diseases such as hypertension where the user is a patient is more likely to suffer if their parents suffered from the condition. As an inherited disease, addiction affects those people who got access to drugs as fetus or as toddlers. Children whose mothers took drugs while pregnant or while breastfeeding are candidates of the addiction disease. Addiction can therefore be passed on from parents to children just like obesity as it is in the genes. For drug addiction to be termed as a disease, there should be symptoms and signs. For instance, the condition of excessive drug usage can be termed as an addiction if the user is dependent on drugs to function. Sometimes addicts shake or develop other complications such as liver failure due to excessive usage of drugs (Gruenert, 2010). During treatment, drug addiction is treated like a disease because one has to undergo medical treatment. Patients are detoxified in a bid to remove the toxic drugs in their system. Rehabilitation centers are a common place where addicts get the necessary treatment. Besides using medicine, addicts are taught to avoid relapse by changing things that prompt them to use drugs. Therapy is also an important part of drug treatment as a patient is able to talk about their problem to a therapist of a group of other addicts. The therapy sessions are similar to those that depression patients undergo and therefore drug addiction can be termed as a disease just lik e depression. Discussion Drug addiction prompts debate on whether it is a disease or a choice. Choices are made consciously, but a disease settles in unexpectedly. If termed as a decease, it shows that addiction comes in without the addict or those around him or her noticing. Most of the time, people get into addiction due to their change in habits. Those around an addict are more aware that an addict is getting into addiction. While getting into addition, an addict can be a frequent at a bar or a drug den. They become more familiar with the people at the bar or get to know who is a dealer in a given estate. As the addiction becomes more noticeable when the patient starts show in physical signs to other people such as sleeping a lot or shaking while not high on drugs. It is a clear indication that their body is already programed to function with the help of drugs.an addict is most likely to stop their daily routine to pursue taking drugs. They can stop going to school or work to be able to buy and take drugs. They can stop going to school or work to be able to buy and take drugs. If they run out of money, they easily steal or borrow to get drugs. The brain is no longer excited by the use of drugs as it was initially, but it becomes dependent on the drugs, as it cannot function without drugs. The brain shuts down when an addict is not ion drugs and that is why addicts sleep for long hours. Addiction can, therefore, be termed as a choice because an addict has a choice to take drugs or not. If one comes from an addicted bloodline, they also have a choice to take drugs or not. The moment they start taking drugs they awaken the addiction in them. While treating addiction in rehabilitation centers, an addict is taught how to say no to drugs by restructuring their minds. The addict’s choice to say no to drugs extends to avoiding the people who lure them to addiction. If an addicted is not fully decided to stop the addiction, they will most likely get back to the addiction. Teaching addicts how to say no to drugs shows that addiction is more of a mind system where one can say no. An addict finds reasons and not excuses saying no. for instance, they find the reason of getting back to school rather than an excuse of been seen sober. Saying no or yes makes all the difference because those are choices. Addiction can, therefore, be classified as a choice rather than a disea se. Addiction starts as a habit where one makes frequent visits to a bar. At this point one has a choice to say no to drugs and can avoid taking drugs. Moreover, when one gets very addicted to drugs, they can decide that they do not want to take drugs and seek help. Help is found in family, friends, church, and rehabilitation centers. The addicts who do not take the rehabilitation path become clean by changing their habits and their friends. It is therefore possible to put an end to an addiction if one decides. One’s brain is their strongest asset and therefore one can make a decision to stop drugs. Deciding to stop drugs can sometimes be accompanied by medication if the patient had contracted other conditions such as liver disease. However, firm decision-making cannot be substituted by any kind of treatment. Deciding to stop drugs can sometimes be accompanied by medication if the patient had contracted other conditions such as liver disease. However, firm decision-making cannot b e substituted by any kind of treatment. Rehabilitation canters only act as places to help people make the right decision, but they cannot prevent an individual from going back to drugs. The over 50% addicts who relapse are not fully decided to fight addiction. One has to decide that they will not take drugs no matter how stressed or available the drugs are. Personal choices are what influence addiction and therefore addiction is a choice and not as disease. Conclusion Drug addiction can be termed as a disease or a choice depending on how one looks at it. It is a choice because a person who takes drugs has the willpower to say no to drugs. Further, one takes drug because they want to take them. On the other hand, it is a disease because when an addict gets deep in the addiction, they cannot function without the drugs. They depend on medical treatment to get well. Detoxing is a major way that drug addiction utilizes medication for treatment. Drug addiction can be termed as a choice with the goal of helping addicts say no to drugs. Further, the addicts can be encouraged to seek treatment by telling them that they are sick. An addict can put a stop to their addiction by making the right choices without necessarily going for treatment. For a person to undergo treatment and remain clean, they should make up their mind to stop drugs. Rehabilitation, medication, and therapy are ways of helping an addict get sober faster butare not a means of getting addic ts entirely clean. Addiction can be termed as a choice rather than a disease.

Who Were the Achaeans Mentioned in Homers Epics

In the epic poems of Homer, the  Iliad and Odyssey, the poet uses lots of different terms to refer to the many different groups of Greeks who fought the Trojans. Lots of other playwrights and historians did the same, too. One of the most commonly used ones was Achaean, both to refer to the Greek forces as a whole and specifically  to people from the region of Achilless homeland or Mycenaeans, the followers of Agamemnon. For example, the Trojan Queen Hecuba laments her fate in Euripidess tragedy  Hercules when a herald tells her that the two sons of Atreus and the  Achaean  people are approaching Troy. The Origins of Achaean Mythologically, the term Achaean derives from a family from which most of the Greek tribes claimed descent. His name? Achaeus! In his play Ion, Euripides writes that a people called after him [Achaeus] will be marked out as having his name. Achaeuss brothers Hellen, Dorus, and Ion also supposedly fathered great swaths of Greeks. Archaeologists seeking to prove the Trojan War really happened also cite the similarity between the word Achaean and the Hittite word Ahhiyawa, which was  archaeologically attested in a bunch of Hittite texts. The people of Ahhiyawa, which sounds like Achaea, lived in western Turkey, as many Greeks later did. There was even a recorded conflict between the guys from Ahhiyawa and the people of Anatolia: perhaps the real-life Trojan War? Sources Achaeans The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Archaeology. Analysis Of Arthur Miller s Death Of A Salesman

Emily Alimusa COM 101—FALL 2014 Death of A Salesman Essay Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman offers an instructive example for understanding the production and maintenance of identity through communicative interaction in a family using the character Biff Loman. Throughout the play, we see Biff’s character develop and change. He is in an identity crisis and is trying to understand his place in the Loman family. Biff is constantly seeking the truth about himself. He believes there is more to his life than the lies Willy has been feeding him and his brother all of their life. In the same note, he wants to prove to his father that he is not the under achiever Willy makes him out to be. In the play, Willy Loman creates his own reality for himself. This reality is merely a fantasy world where he and his two sons are great and successful salesmen. They are well liked and the best there is. Willy tells his sons since they were at least teenagers that they key to success is to be well liked. Be internal izing this into his boys, they believe that his father is successful and that they want to be just like him. Linda, Willy’s wife, has helped him co-construct his reality by constantly making excuses for Willy. She maintains the image of Willy being great all the way through the boys’ adulthood. This is especially important for Biff. Biff has always thought very highly of his father. Through social interaction, this reality is maintained. Brain and Language Free Essays

Damasio and Damasio (1992) discussed the detailed mechanics of language processing by the human brain. Their article, first established a general understanding of such concepts as the brain’s ability to categorize and classify word-forms through the mediation of the human sensors. According to their article, the brain’s left and right hemispheres contains three neural structures. We will write a custom essay sample on Brain and Language or any similar topic only for you Order Now The first extensive structure processes the non-verbal representations organizing objects, events, and relationships. Second structure, located only in the left hemisphere is responsible for producing the language through and with phonemes, phonemic and syntactic structures with the resulting word-forms. They referred to the third structure as a mediating structure that can change the concept into the word form or vice versa. Their further discourse proceeded into the specifics of the brain anatomy and various effects of the damage or lesions of the portions of the brain. Their examples with the color recognition were particularly impressive when they described the condition known as achromatopsia – lack of ability to perceive colors (i. e. seeing the environment in the shades of gray). The article was especially effective in describing the complicated mechanism behind the color recognition, color categorization and classification, and producing the correct word-form for the specific color. The article argues against the traditionally thought the â€Å"pictorial† representations of the objects, persons, or any combination of the environmental experiences but instead the authors describe their theory of how records of neural activity are stored in the sensory and motor cortices. Such patterns of synaptic activity also act through and with associations on which one particular object will associate with the patterns of color, shape, usage, tactile perceptions, and the feelings that a person has usually when using this object. The authors further state that the neural actions that occur as the result of interaction between the person and the object happen in different functional areas of the brain and come together in areas of â€Å"convergence† of synaptic connections. Then recall of the event and its associated experiences depend upon simultaneous reactivation of the neural actions within the neuron assemblies when those fire simultaneously and reactivate the previously occurred patterns of neural activity. Simultaneously, the categorization and classification occurs in such similar or related neural actions are activated together. The categorization and classification abilities of the first neural structure make it possible to distinguish objects by their characteristics and function ‘stored’ previously, as Damasio and Damasio describe the example with a coffee cup. Such ‘recollection’ is perhaps responsible for the brain’s ability to express the formed within concept and to understand a comprehensive input as the concept. The article further exemplifies a curious condition in which a patient would loose an ability to define a concept for a unique entity (like an animal species in the author’s example). From this example, the reader would learn that the affected patient would not be able to name any animal species (i. e. raccoon) nor would say its size, color, or shape. He would simply say â€Å"animal† when presented with the picture of a raccoon (Damasio Damasio, 1992). When describing the affect produced by the specific lesion of the portion within the left hemisphere, the authors wrote about the earlier discovery by Paul Broca and Carl Wernicke of the phenomenon called ‘cerebral dominance’ which specifically pointed out at the left hemisphere as the organ responsible for the production and processing of human language in â€Å"99 percent of right-handed and two-thirds of left handers. † The article confirms these studied by briefly discussing the research by Edward Klima of the University of California at San Diego and Ursula Bellugi of the Salk Institute of Biological Studies in San Diego who have discovered that aphasia (condition that impedes language-interpreting ability) is caused by damage to the particular region of the left hemisphere of the brain. Using the aphasic patients, the investigators were able to map the neural activities responsible for the formation of the language and its interpretation (also including other variations of language such as sign language) (Damasio Damasio, 1992). With having a map in front of them, the neuroscientists and other field investigators would be able to specify exactly which function would be impaired as the result of damage to which portion of the left hemisphere. This would also extend to the predictive ability as far as other functions of the whole language production mechanism are concerned. Example of such can be actual production of speech sounds, intonation (i. e. speaking in a ‘flat tone’, long pauses between the words and defective grammar), the impairment of associative and habit learning, production of nouns, production of verbs (nouns and verbs are produced and processed in different regions), difficulty understanding meanings that represent the syntactic structures, and the inability to understand the meaning of non-reversible passive structures. The authors further attempt to defend their point of view in favor of the mediating system between the structure that is responsible for concept processing and the system that actually produces word and word structures. According to them, the mediating system’s function would be that of the selection of the correct meaning of lexicon or that connecting the concepts’ interrelationship. It is understood that mediation system is mostly activated when the person attempts to understand the comprehensive input. The purpose of comprehension sets in motion the mediating system that is capable of bringing associative connections between the concepts, particular experiences, and generalized experiences together. To exemplify their view, the authors mention A. N. and L. R. as patients who have a problem in retrieval of common nouns representing certain entities. Their deficit in the specific word-form retrieval is causes by their inability to activate the mediation system that deprives them of the ability to bring the connection between the concepts (i. e. of the noun and what that noun represents as far as the object and its function). Damasio and Damasio explained such selective deficiency by stating that the selectivity in conceptualization of entities depends upon the absence or presence of the personal relation of the patient to the entity/concept. By loosing the function of some regions of the left hemisphere, the patients will respond by loosing the specific speech/conceptualization function that is mapped to that region. In A. N. and L. R. case it was the damage to anterior and midtemporal cortices that rendered them unable to pick may common nouns. The article concludes with the detailed discourse into the studies by the group of researchers at Washington University. Specifically, this group was interested in the production and interpretation of verbs and functors and how the nouns can be mediated together with the appropriate actions, like the noun ‘apple’ would mediate with the verb ‘eat. ’ Their conclusions illustrated a situation in which the damage to the certain left hemisphere regions would disrupt such association rendering the patient unable to produce the appropriate verb and further disrupting their use of grammar (Damasio Damasio, 1992). The article was comprehensive in its purpose in terms of being able to describe the complex structure and function of the left hemisphere’s regions responsible for processing, production, and mediation of the components of human language. The only critique of the article that I have is that the authors attempted to place too much of very specific information into a very small format. The complexity of the concepts behind the message would be better delivered if more practical examples were used and the text would be delineated with a larger number of lay terms. In general, the article’s audience appeared to be professionals or paraprofessionals who already had a significant understanding within the field. It would be difficult to understand for people with a limited knowledge and background within the field. The illustrations were adequate and the sources appropriate in both quality and quantity. My suggestion for the further research would be targeting the Visio-Spatial Memory Units that are units of memory assembled from different perceptual input within the Working Memory (Baddely, 1992). Further, my suggestion would be to investigate the alternative approaches to the definition and theoretical function-ability of the short-term memory. References Baddeley AD. 1992. Working memory. The Lord of the Rings Argumentative Essay Example For Students

The Lord of the Rings Argumentative Essay The makers of the Lord of the Rings use many other aspects of film making to create the same contrast. One of these aspects is music and sound effects. During the film there are many different types of music and sound effects. At the peaceful areas there is quiet slow music as if it were in the distance. There is also sounds of the wind, childrens laughter, birds chirping etc. This again gives the effect of a peaceful place that can do no harm. In the parts of the film where evil is present, there is much louder and more powerful music. This is often accompanied by screams and loud banging in the background. When the first tower/castle shot we see comes you can hear all of this. This is a sensational effect and is a brilliant example of how the contrast between evil and good is shown. Also used in the film to create certain effects is lighting. Using light is a very good effect to show different places in film. For example, in places where evil may be present it is incredibly dark. The sky is always dark (often night-time) and the building are even darker. There is just enough light to see the right details. This often creates a shadow-like effect. An example of this would be when we first see the sight of evil in the film. There is loud banging, screams, panning and low angle camera views as well as limited light and fire. Quite often in the film, where evil is present, the only source of light is fire. Fire can also be associated with hell which can add to the effect of evilness. This is a very good effect and shows the contrast between good and evil very well. This is because in the film where we are seeing good, there is sunlight and flowers and grass make the place seem brighter too. Characters body language and their facial expressions are a very good effect in the Lord of the Rings. Body language in the film is used to show tiredness, exhaustion, sadness, anger, etc. Body language shows a small portion of the contrast between good and evil. Some of the evil characters almost always look as if they are full of energy and up for a fight. The good characters often look exhausted. Facial expressions are one of the most important aspects of film and not just this particular film, any film. Facial expressions can do so much. They can show whether a person is worried, scared, happy, bored, aggravated, sympathetic, to name just a few. Sometimes facial expressions are used instead of speech because they show so much. During the film most, if not all, facial expressions are shown using close-up, extreme close-up and double camera shots. As shown in the picture below, it shows that Gandalf is clearly worried. Also note that he is in a dark place as he realises they is in grave danger. The Lord of the Rings also has a range of dialogue that adds to the contrast of good and evil. During the film time there are many types of language used. For the parts of the film where good are involved, speech is in a medium pitch and often a medium volume. It is not spoken in a threatening or negative way either. In the times of action/panic/when evil threatens the dialogue is often loud, low pitched, negatively spoken and often rushed. As for when it is an all evil part of the film, the dialogue is very low pitched but the volume varies although there is loud banging, crashes and screaming in the background of those scenes.

However, maximum businesses use the social media as their communication tool to cover a large number of customers (Holt 2016).Social media communication refers to the communication process that is exhibited through the use of digital tool. As commented by Ramanathanet al. (2017), social media communication is a modern business process, which can be done by using electronic media. However, for business organizations, it is crucial to incorporate the modern technology in their communication system to enhance the customer service. Hence, application of the social media gives the opportunity to the business owners to promote their brand as well and their products by using the digital media, which is an example of modern technology. This study deals with the promotion of Orchid women wear, which is a popular brand of John Smedley. This organization sells over 30 countries in the world. This is a UK based knitting fa shion company and established in 1784. This brand has 200 stores all over the world and their sales revenue generation is high. Therefore, the role of the social media in the branding of John Smedley will be discussed in this study. A critical discussion will be conducted in this study based on the application of social media in branding. Company background John Smedley is a UK based fashion organization that offers various types of womens wear. However, woolen clothes, cotton wear and various types of fashionable clothing items are the major products of this organization. John Smedley is popular for the knitwear products. One of their popular products is Orchid women fashion wear. This organization is a global operator and has business throughout the world. This organization is considered as one of the leading companies for their fine gauge knitwear products. In the recent years changing demand of the customers is the major challenge of the global fashion market. However, it is often difficult for the fashion organizations to cope up with the changing need of the consumers as a result, there is a huge competition among the fashion companies to make something unique or innovative product. Orchid women wear is a renowned brand of John Smedley among their various women wears (Johnsmedley.com 2018). This is a knitwear product and made up o f wool. This is very much comfortable for the women in any weather. Thus, this brand is popular among the women who prefer to use John Smedley products. Issue identification Traditional communication or advertising process in the business promotion needs a proper budget and a specific market (Bremset al. 2017). TV, direct mail, newspaper, and radio are the traditional communication channels that are used in the business. The traditional communication channels are more expensive in comparison to the social media communication as traditional communication needs more workforce while social media needs less workforce and it depends on the technology. In the recent years, John Smedley has faced issuesdue to the using of traditional marketing communication. Traditional communication channels need a particular target audience as a result, it is difficult for the organization to select the target audience. On the other hand, they are not able to cover a huge range of consumers through this traditional communication process. In the year 2014 their sale was increased by 14% from the previous year and the revenue generation was 17.2. In the year 2015 their customer number is increased by 10% from the previous year, which ensures their growth in the global market (Johnsmedley.com. 2018). However, traditional communication process has a specific target market but social media does not need any specific target market as it covers a large range of customers from different geographical regions (Kedzior et al. 2016). Hence, by the application of social media, John Smedley can promote their Orchid women wear in a huge range of customer domain easily. There is no need to expand the high budget to implement this communication process.Traditional media includes personal selling, pamphlets and leaflet distribution that needs more workforces. This enhances the cost of the product promotion (Nyangwe and Buhalis 2018).However, application of the social media in the promotion of the business will be an effective approach for such organization as it will help them to cover a large number of people from different geographical regions. Role of social media in branding in the context of Johh Smedley Clothing products among the other products of the fashion industry run fast. However, consumers especially the women have a strong addiction towards the clothing products. They prefer the variety of products, which are comfortable to wear (Kedzioret al. 2016). Hence, the traditional marketing or communication is not as effective as the social media communication in promoting a brand as the traditional marketing process is not attractive like the social media. Through the social media women can see a variety of products and they do not need to go outside. In order to improve the brand image of an organization promotion through social media is an effective approach for the organization. In the context of John Smedley, they want to improve the brand image of Orchid women wear through the application of social media. Therefore, maximum people spend a lot of time on the social media website as they get refreshment and also gather new knowledge regarding any product or service via social media. Get customer reviews regarding a brand Social media makes a unique platform for John Smedley for their new brand and they will be able to get customer feedbacks via such sites. Such customer review is a good process for an organization to understand their brand position in the market (Habibiet al. 2016).Changing needs of the consumers is a big problem for the fashion market and they do not understand the exact demand of the consumers. However, by checking the customer review regarding a product on social media sites the organization will able to understand the type of the products that the current market prefers. Enhance the information sharing regarding the brand Social media is an effective way for the business as it allows the consumers to research discover and share the information about a brand (Dinnie 2015). Application of the social media in the branding of John Smedley will bring a scope for their new brand Orchid women wear to reach in a large domain of the consumers. As commented by Dinnie(2015), social media is the best platform to communicate with the people and people also share their opinion regarding any product or brand. As criticized by Kohliet al. (2015), is the business industry does not train their employees properly to use social media for business purpose then they fail to communicate their brand vision. This can lead John Smedley to an inconsistent as a result; their brand image can be affected. However, John Smedle y can represent their brand image through the social media application in the context of their Orchid women wear. On the other hand, misrepresentation of the offered service or products and their features can hamper the brand image of such particular brand. Social media creates customers interest towards a product or a brand (Chahaland Rani 2016). In the context of John Smedley, advertisement or the promotion of Orchid women wear through social media enables them to deliver their messages to the public domain quickly. As a result, the audience starts to get information about the particular brand. Then they talk about the brand and pay their attention to it. Shopping in recent times is popular in the social media platforms. For example, Twitter and Facebook are two of the major social media platforms, which contribute more to improving the promotion of a brand and the enhancement of its image. For John Smedley, if they promote or advertise their products through such social media then audience get information about their Orchid women wears. This will make their brand popular and to improve its image in the consumer domain. Besides the positive aspects of social media advertisement there are some negative aspects. As argued by Kohli et al . (2015), advertisement via social media often affected due to the overflowing newsfeed. In the Facebook often people skip the messages or advertisement of a brand due to the overflow of the newsfeeds. This may affect the brand promotion in the context of John Smedley. Therefore, it is important for the organization to give a regular update of their product or brand on the social media. If the gap occurs in this process then it will be difficult for John Smedley to promote their brand Orchid women wear through social networking sites. On the other hand positive outcomes of social media highlights that social media especially the Facebook increase the customer engagement (Habibiet al. 2016). However, if John Smedley creates a page on facebook regarding their Orchid women wears with more details then it can reach easily to the consumer domain. Hence, it has been found that women discuss more about the fashion over social media like Facebook. Therefore, they refer to their friends the fashion brand that they have used. This will give John Smedley a good opportunity to improve the brand image as well promotion of Orchid women wear via social media advertisement. Conclusion The above piece of the study reveals the social media application in branding in the context of John Smedley. However, this fashion organization is going to promote their new brand Orchid women wear through the social media advertisement. However, the major problem of current fashion market is the changing demand of the consumers. Hence, the application of the social media will help John Smedley to gather the customer feedbacks and develop innovative product as per the needs of the current market. Privacy and the Enactment of Confidentiality Case Study

Privacy and the Enactment of Confidentiality - Case Study Example This research focuses on specific issues relative to these concerns. In conclusion it gives validation as to why everyone should be allowed to have a right to privacy regardless of what their status in society is. The basis for this is the fact that it is the only logical resolution to keep there from being so many disagreements between news reporters and high celebrities, as well as the basics such as medical doctors and their patients' right to privacy, etc. In whole the final conclusion is the right to privacy should be incorporated to include every facet of life that a person wants kept private as long as it isn't stepping over any legal boundaries. For many decades the citizens in England have assumed that they have an impartial right to complete privacy to their private life. Unfortunately this ideal has seemingly been having serious complications since 2002 when one initial case appeared to provoke controversy into this concept. The case Campbell v. Mirror Group Newspapers changed everyone's position in England on exactly what type of rights to privacy they really are endowed with (Lamont 2004). In this case it was found initially that the Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Newspaper in allowing them the ability to report the actions of Campbell but later Campbell continued her arguments that this form of invasion of privacy was against her right to confidentiality and invaded her personal life to the extent that to much information was given to the general public about her comings and goings and personal actions (Lamont 2004).Because Naomi Campbell won out in the long run, the idea for freedom of expression in the newsp apers and other public news source outlets has been quelled and questioned to whether it will be allowed in the future within regard to the extreme way it was conceptualized on in this high profile case. It was the protection of the law situated around Confidentiality that ensured Campbell had the upper hand over MGN, even though initially it seemed she was going to lose her case. In many ways this case helped in guaranteeing that other people would not be up against this same form of invasion into their private life (Lamont 2004). This form of law is not new in England because historically it can be documented where the law of Confidentiality initially stemmed from. There use to be a law against eavesdropping and the reason it existed was in fact to protect people against false accusations and rumors, the same as the law of Confidentiality is meant to do. Many of these laws have not had to be implemented or used until recently and many people claim this is due to the adversity that the Paparazzi are causing. If they would only accept that there is only so far that they should go when publicizing information about people then there would not be the problem that is in existence today. Now the Human Rights Act of 1998 also is a form of law that protects the individual privacy rights of citizens. Again, it is not something that would have to be emphasized if the media would simply quell their obnoxious style in gaining information about people, especially high celebrities. Of course Naomi Campbell's rights to keep her recovery treatment in a personal context makes ample sense since no one would want that broadcasted, and logically it really has no
